On March 20, 2017, the 2016-2017 Greater St. Charles, Illinois Visitors Guide was awarded Best Visitor Publication at the Illinois Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism. The Governors Awards honor “innovative tourism marketing initiatives that promote the outstanding destinations, attractions and events throughout Illinois. Among the businesses eligible to compete are destination marketing organizations, convention & visitor bureaus, chambers of commerce, tourism attractions, museums and cultural institutions; restaurants, cafés and bars; hotels and accommodations, retail and entertainment centers and other travel and hospitality-related organizations and associations.”

The Best Visitor Publication was one of nine categories under consideration for a Governor’s Award. The Bureau competed in three categories this year: Best Festival or Event, Best Cooperative Partnership with the Come to Our Table Promotion, and Best Visitor Publication. Competition categories are defined by the size of each bureau’s annual operating and marketing budgets. The Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau competed against 10 other bureaus, many with budgets nearly twice its size, to capture the honor.

Specific criteria used to judge publication entrees included Target Market/Audience, Purpose/Marketing Objectives, Execution – Strategies used to meet the target audience and stated objectives’ and Impact/Results – how you measured and achieved success or effectiveness with this project.

The 2016-2017 Greater St. Charles, Illinois Visitor Guide is a 60-page publication providing advertisement, editorial highlights about the area, and thematic listings with a key of geographical area, pricing and features for the businesses, attractions and events in the GSCCVB service areas of St. Charles, Campton Hills, Elburn, St. Charles and Campton Townships. The stated purpose of the guide is to: 1. Lure potential visitors to choose the Greater St. Charles area as an over-night destination and to entice previous guests to return to the area. 2. Provide an easy reference tool for guests after they arrive and encourage them to enjoy the plethora of tourism offerings in and around Greater St. Charles, and 3. Promote Greater St. Charles as a destination of distinction, class and quality.

Executive Director Lula S. Cassidy and Associate Director DeAnn Wagner were on hand to accept the award for the Bureau at a special gala and awards ceremony that took place during the conference, which was held in Springfield. The Bureau was subsequently celebrated for winning for the honor during a St. Charles City Council Meeting on April 3, 2017.
